Users Stopping Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Far More Rapidly Than People Using Diet and Exercise

Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study suggests that people who discontinue new weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt traditional lifestyle regimens.

Research printed in a prominent health publication shows that while obese individuals frequently drop substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.

"People purchasing such treatments need to be informed of the potential of quick rebound weight gain when the medication is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a return to starting weight in about one and a half years.

Comparing Therapies

The research, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of patients, contrasted the results of these new drugs with other pills.

Scientists emphasize that individuals who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a more gradual weight regain—approximately 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Quick Regain

Experts propose the mechanism of the jabs explains the heightened rebound.

These medications mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates appetite.

"Artificially providing the hormone levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.

"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' leads to appetite is unsuppressed, making binge eating a significant risk."

A Chronic Disease?

Health authorities advise the jabs for individuals with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended lifestyle changes.

Many experts say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This view is supported by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like hypertension.

User Experiences

People who have stopped the jabs describe a intense resurgence of hunger.

"It felt as if a trigger flipping and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not established permanent lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.

Growing Interest

Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with desire remaining high.

  • Use is more common among women than men.
  • The middle-aged age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • Many obtain the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.

Finally, experts stress that while these medications are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural management.
