The Compassion of Strangers: The Way a Man I Had Just Met Assisted Me Obtain the Role That Altered My Path

During the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a backpacking trip to Europe with a travel partner. Because my companion was interested in starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there before heading to London.

We reached the graduate housing, a large 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side called International House. Setting down our luggage, we made our way to the dining hall, where we grabbed food, sat down, and engaged in conversation with fellow residents.

Adjacent to my seat was an Iraqi man pursuing an engineering degree at a prestigious New York university. He asked me what I my profession was, and I explained that I had recently completed my studies with a science degree and had been working on studies using an electron microscope.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at Columbia University – right next door to the engineering department, which was why he was aware of it. He suggested that I consider applying for a job with them. I chuckled at the suggestion, explaining that I was about to fly to Europe and, even more importantly, I lacked a US visa.

The following day I went out exploring, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The Iraqi student came up to me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the head of the electron microscope unit at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I attended the interview – but immediately told my interviewer that I was without a work permit, so I was probably wasting her time.

As is common in NYC – a place where opportunities abound – she said: “That can be arranged. When can you start?” I missed my plane to London.

I was employed there for three years. One of the benefits was that I was granted no-cost classes at Columbia, and I seized the chance to finish a postgrad program in international relations.

We didn't cross paths after that and I don’t even know his name, but his remarkable generosity transformed my future in numerous aspects. I lacked the courage or nerve to contact anyone at an prestigious college and seek a position. Additionally, I had always wanted to take classes in another country, but could never have afforded it without that educational benefit.

What's more, that gig at Columbia led me to a job in Zurich where I met my beautiful French husband, with whom I now have a family of four kids. It was a total sliding doors moment. That helpful person redirected my path in life, and I’m eternally thankful.
